How To Make Astronaut Costumes?

October 4th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Astronaut Costumes

1. To make an astronaut helmet, draw an oval face opening (at least 7 inches wide by 5 inches high) in pencil on the plastic bucket. Use a hammer and a nail to make a pilot hole in the plastic, then cut out the oval with wire cutters. With a craft knife, cut out two 2- by 9-inch foam-board rectangles to use as helmet braces (a parent or other adult’s job). Round off the lower corners and duct-tape the tops against the inside of the helmet.

2. Roll up a dish towel, wrap it around your child’s head, and tape it closed to form a ring. Remove the towel ring from your child’s head and tape it inside the top of the helmet. (When it’s time to wear the helmet, lower it straight down so the towel ring fits onto your child’s head and the foam braces slide between the space pack and his back.)

3. For a space pack, wrap white duct tape around two empty milk jug air tanks to hold them together. Then fashion four 17-inch-long duct tape straps (as described in the Slime Bucket directions). Use two of the straps as suspenders to connect the air tanks to the plastic utensil tray control panel, taping the ends securely. Have your child try on the space pack, and adjust the suspender lengths if necessary.

4. Use the remaining two straps as side bindings that extend from the air tanks to the sides of the control panel. Once you’ve taped them to the back of the jugs, have your child try on the pack again to determine the right strap length (there should be little slack). Trim the straps if needed and attach the free ends to the inside of the utensil tray with adhesive-backed Velcro.

5. Use a craft knife to cut an asterisk shape in both sides of the utensil tray (adults only). Push one end of one of the clear plastic tubes through each hole and insert the opposite ends into the milk jug tops, taping them in place. Finally, decorate the space pack with mirrors and reflectors, and attach stickers to the turtleneck, sweatpants, boots, and helmet.

Thats it, now you have made an Astronaut Costume!

1. Buy Astronaut snacks.
A favorite that’s available commercially is astronaut ice cream. Other foods that astronauts eat will be harder to find packaged as space food. A good approach would be to buy MRE packs, or dehydrated backpacker foods. Avoid things like crackers that break into crumbs. You don’t want crumbs flying around the space ship.

2. Buy drinks.
In space cups don’t work because there’s no gravity. You have to drink out of a bag with an attached straw. You can’t buy these exact bags on earth, but you can approximate the experience with capri suns, or other drinks tied up in plastic bags and pierced with a straw next to the knot.

3. Decorate.
Hang stars and planets from the ceiling. Put a mission control banner over the front door. Put a slide show of NASA pictures on the TV.

4. Make space helmets out of paper bags.
Cut a big hole in one side to see out of, and cut the sides to rest on the shoulders. Let the kids decorate their helmets. Designate an area as outer space. Suggest that they pretend they can’t go there without a helmet.

5. Make flashlight planetarium lights.
Cut a flashlight sized hole in one end of a box, and poke holes in the other end in the shape of constellations. Shine the light through to create stars on the ceiling of a dark room.

6. Make balloon rockets.
Cut pieces of drinking straw and put them into the mouth of an oblong balloon. Put a rubber band around the straw and the balloon to hold them together. Now when you blow up the balloon, when you let go it will act like a rocket. Suggest rocket races to see who’s goes the furthest.

7. If your budget allows, get an inflatable jumping house.
Kids like the idea of being an astronaut because they want to be weightless. That’s hard to do on earth, but a jumping house is a step in that direction.

Halloween Astronaut Costumes

Halloween is one of those holidays where you get to be a kid no matter how old you are. It’s the one day of the year where you can dress as stupid as you want and not have to worry about your neighbors looking at you like you came from Mars. So what do you do when it comes time to picking out a costume? After all, you want to stand out from the crowd. You don’t want to be just another pretty or not so pretty face. Well, there are several ways you can go with picking out a Halloween Astronaut Costume.

One direction is to go with the standard tried and true costumes. Things like ghosts, witches, Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula and things like that. But in order to make your standard costume stand out from everybody else there is a little trick you can do that will really get attention. It’s very simple and yet few people think of it. So you can thank the author of this article later for this suggestion.

Find a twist. Make it as crazy and as insane as you want. It doesn’t matter. The more wild, the better. For example. On top of your ghost costume, wear a bolder hat. Maybe put a necktie around your neck. Glasses are also a great twist. The nearsighted ghost. That will really get a laugh. Maybe wear hip boots over the bottom of your sheet. You might even try painting a bulls-eye on the front of your sheet. And here’s a great idea. Remember the ghost busters emblem from the movie? You can put one of those on the front of your sheet with a line going through it. Kind of like a no ghost busters zone. All of a sudden, with any one of these ideas, your standard, dull ghost costume is the hit of the party.

For those of you who want to go for the celeb costumes, there are plenty these days to choose from. The one thing you don’t want to do is to choose a celebrity who is currently the hottest thing on the planet. Why? Simple. Everybody and their grandmother is going to be wearing that costume. No, you want to go with celebs that are still popular but not quite the hottest thing going. That way, when people see you in your costume they’ll be able to recognize you and yet not be saying to themselves, “great, another Jessica Simpson”.

Finally, the last option you’ve got is to be totally original. Do you remember the episode of The Honeymooners where Ralph made his man from space costume? He took a bunch of things from around the house and put them together to make a very original costume. You don’t have to be quite that creative but you get the idea. Use your imagination. Remember, this is Halloween, so there is no such thing as right or wrong, just dull.

If you follow the above tips, you are bound to come up with something that you won’t be ashamed to walk out of the house in.
